Once again, we have witnessed an encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees. They came to Jesus complaining about how poorly His disciples were keeping the rituals of cleanliness that they believed are essential to religious faithfulness. Indeed, the Pharisees performed all kinds of rituals in the name of being pure. In some ways, they were pure, but their motivations often lacked that purity.
The Pharisees believed that the appearance of doing God's will was the same as actually doing it. They were far more concerned with human-made rules, rationalizations, and the appearance of purity rather than having a heart that is good and pure.
As we know, Jesus didn't see it that way. He knew that God looks deep into our hearts and that He knows what is inside of a person.
Let us pray that we may work for that true purity of heart that keeps our actions and attitudes closer in line with the will of God.+
